Do fellows receive robotic training?
Trainees have qualified early for advanced colorectal robotic surgery. Four of our faculty are facile at the robot and offer advanced robotic training to the fellows. It is important to understand that the robotic approach to surgery is an advanced skill that requires commitment on the part of the trainee including mastery of skills outside of the operative arena.
It should also be stressed that it is a stated objective of the faculty at UHCI/St Marks Hospital that fellows leave the program with as many “tools in their toolkit” as possible. It is incredibly important to the faculty that the trainees have exposure and are facile with as many different approaches to colorectal surgery as possible. This includes open laparotomy, laparoscopic surgery, hand assist laparoscopy, both medial to lateral and lateral to medial approaches to laparoscopy and the robotic approach.

The intermountain west offers a unique opportunity for mastery of pelvic floor. We offer a multidisciplinary approach to assist the patient with pelvic floor pathology. Faculty have experience with advanced and re-operative approaches to rectal prolapse including ventral mesh rectopexy, perineal proctectomy and posterior mesh rectopexy. We have a robust pelvic floor lab and on-site anorectal manometry and pelvic floor physiotherapy. Training in sacral nerve stimulation is available.

Have there been deficiencies in ACGME case log minimums?
Despite the challenges associated with the COVID19 pandemic, there have not been deficiencies in the case log minimums. Fellows have met all requirements including IPAA (J or S pouch restorative proctocolectomy), rectal prolapse and rectal cancers.

Is U.S. clinical experience required for international graduates?
No, US clinical experience is not required but it is strongly preferred. We do not consider observerships, externships and/or preceptorships to be clinical experience.

Where can I find support in applying to Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS)?
The ECFMG offers a service called ERAS Support Services to anyone who is ECFMG certified or nearing certification. The ERAS Support Services will issue the ERAS token, receive the applicant's supporting documents and transmits them to the ERAS Post Office, and provide client support between the various organizations. Do you have USMLE minimum score requirements for Step 1 and Step 2?
Applicants must have passed USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) Step 1 and have taken both components of Step 2 and Step 3 or the COMLEX (Comprehensive Osteopathic Medical Licensing Examination) Level 1 and have taken both components of Level 2. For standardized test scores, those candidates who have passed both step 1/step 2/step 3 USMLE or level 1/level 2 COMLEX with high scores on the first attempt will be considered more competitive in that category.
